MLCC Price Shock: Samsung Electro-Mechanics and Taiyo Yuden Both Raise Prices Heading Into H2 2026

The passive components market just got a lot more expensive, a lot faster. In late July, Samsung Electro-Mechanics notified customers of a blanket 30% price increase across its entire MLCC portfolio, effective for shipments from August 1, 2026. Days later, Taiyo Yuden — the world's third-largest MLCC manufacturer — sent its own customer notice requesting an additional price adjustment for shipments beginning September 1, its second such move this year.

For buyers used to treating MLCCs as a commodity line item, this is a signal worth taking seriously. Both notices point to the same root cause: AI server demand is pulling high-capacitance MLCC capacity away from everything else, and raw material costs (barium titanate, nickel powder, precious metals) are climbing on top of it.

Samsung Electro-Mechanics: 30% Across the Board

Samsung's notice was unusually broad — the 30% increase applies to all MLCC products under its Markup Business Code, spanning consumer electronics, industrial control, automotive, and AI server categories, with no specifications exempted. The company cited structural demand growth that has outpaced its ability to expand capacity fast enough to absorb it internally.

Demand data backs this up: Samsung's book-to-bill ratio hit 1.31 in June — the highest since the pandemic — while on-hand inventory dropped below 30 days of supply. The company has also locked in hundreds of billions of won in new AI server MLCC contracts this year alone.

Taiyo Yuden: A Second Hike, and No Delivery Guarantee

Taiyo Yuden's move is arguably the more concerning one for planning purposes. This is the company's second price adjustment of 2026 — the first, issued in April, took effect in May and covered soft-termination MLCC series along with inductors, ferrite beads, RF devices, and select aluminum electrolytic capacitors. The new notice, dated July 23, is narrower in product category but broader across the core MLCC range, and takes effect September 1.

Key detail: Taiyo Yuden has stated it cannot guarantee delivery schedules even for customers who accept the new pricing. In other words, paying more doesn't automatically buy you stock.

No uniform percentage has been publicly disclosed for the September adjustment — Taiyo Yuden says specifics will be communicated through its sales channels, and final pricing will vary by series, region, customer agreement, and existing price-protection terms.

What This Means for Your Sourcing Plan

This isn't an isolated passive-components blip. It's arriving alongside broader Q3 2026 price actions from Nichicon, YAGEO, and even Qualcomm, and it follows a first half where DRAM contract prices rose as much as 90–95% quarter over quarter. The pattern across categories is consistent: AI infrastructure demand is absorbing capacity that used to serve everyone else, and suppliers are passing the cost through faster than in past cycles.

Three practical takeaways for procurement teams:

  • Treat open quotes as time-sensitive. A quote held for a week on an MLCC line item may no longer reflect current cost by the time it's approved.
  • Don't assume price increases solve availability. Taiyo Yuden's own language makes clear that paying more is not the same as securing delivery — allocation and qualification status still matter.
  • Diversify sourcing paths now, not after the next notice. With franchised distribution facing allocation pressure, open-market and sourcing-on-demand channels are increasingly where real-time availability gets found.
